Why Your Website Matters More Than Your Instagram

Of all the social media platforms out there, Instagram is hands-down my favorite. It’s visual, creative, and such a fun way to connect with others. But here’s the thing: you can’t rely on Instagram to be your entire brand.

Recently, I came across a beautiful account—stunning photos, thoughtful captions, thousands of engaged followers, and even some sponsored content. It was clear the creator had poured her heart and time into it. Naturally, I wanted to see more—maybe a blog, portfolio, or website to learn more about her work. But to my surprise, she didn’t have one. Instagram was her only platform.

hereAnd that got me thinking: what happens if Instagram changes—or disappears altogether?

The truth is, none of us own our Instagram accounts (or any social media account, for that matter). Algorithms shift, features come and go, and entire platforms can change overnight. If Instagram were to shut down tomorrow, where would your audience go? How would they find you?

That’s why having a website or blog matters so much. It’s the only online space you truly own—your corner of the internet that won’t vanish because of an algorithm update or app crash. It’s where you can tell your story in full, share your work, sell your products or services, and connect with your audience on a deeper level.

Now don’t get me wrong—I’m not saying you shouldn’t invest time and energy into Instagram. You absolutely should! It’s a powerful tool for connection and growth. But it should be an extension of your brand, not the foundation of it.

Your website or blog is the heart of your online presence. It’s where your community can land after discovering you on social media. It’s where they can learn more about you, work with you, sign up for your newsletter, or come back again and again for inspiration.

So if you’ve been thinking about starting a website or blog—do it. Especially if you already have an Instagram following, no matter how big or small. Give your audience a space to get to know you beyond the grid.

And if you’re not sure where to start, or if Squarespace might be the right platform for you, I’m always happy to chat.
